1Introduction

ScholarTasks ("ScholarTasks", "we", "us", or "our") operates a platform that connects Kenyan students and graduates ("writers") to paid academic writing tasks posted by clients. This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect when you use our website, mobile experience, or related services (together, the "Platform"), why we collect it, and the choices you have.

This policy is written to comply with the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 and the regulations issued under it. By creating an account or otherwise using the Platform, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here.

2Information we collect

We collect information in three ways: what you give us directly, what we collect automatically, and what we receive from third parties.

  • Account information: full name, email address, phone number, national ID or student ID (for verification), academic level, and subject strengths.
  • Payment information: your M-Pesa-registered phone number and transaction history on the Platform. We do not store your M-Pesa PIN or full mobile money credentials.
  • Task content: the written work you submit, client briefs, messages exchanged through the Platform, and any files you upload.
  • Usage data: IP address, device type, browser, pages visited, and timestamps, collected automatically through cookies and similar technologies (see our Cookie Policy).
  • Verification data: information from identity or academic verification checks, where applicable.

3How we use your data

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your writer account and verify your eligibility for tasks.
  • Match you with available tasks and process your submissions.
  • Process payouts to your M-Pesa account once a task is approved.
  • Communicate with you about tasks, payments, policy updates, or support requests.
  • Monitor for fraud, plagiarism, or abuse of the Platform.
  • Improve the Platform through aggregated, anonymised usage analysis.
  • Comply with legal obligations, including tax and financial record-keeping requirements.
We do not sell your personal data to third parties for marketing purposes.

4Payments & M-Pesa data

Payouts are processed through Safaricom's M-Pesa mobile money service. When you link an M-Pesa number to your account, we share only the information necessary to complete the transaction (your phone number and the payout amount) with our licensed payment processing partner. M-Pesa is a registered trademark of Safaricom PLC; ScholarTasks is not affiliated with or endorsed by Safaricom.

We retain a record of your task earnings and payout history for accounting, tax, and dispute-resolution purposes.

5Sharing your information

We share your information only in the following circumstances:

  • With clients: clients see the writer's submitted work but not your personal contact details unless you choose to share them.
  • With service providers: payment processors, cloud hosting providers, and analytics tools that help us operate the Platform, under contractual confidentiality obligations.
  • For legal reasons: where required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of ScholarTasks, our users, or the public.
  • Business transfers: if ScholarTasks is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your data may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.

6Data retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active and for a reasonable period afterwards to meet legal, accounting, or dispute-resolution requirements — typically up to seven (7) years for financial transaction records, in line with Kenyan tax record-keeping rules. You may request earlier deletion of non-essential data as described in Section 7.

7Your rights

Under the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request correction of inaccurate or outdated data.
  • Request deletion of your data, subject to our legal retention obligations.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing of your data.
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent, without affecting prior lawful processing.
  • Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) of Kenya.

8Data security

We use industry-standard technical and organisational measures — including encryption in transit, access controls, and regular security reviews — to protect your data. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9Children's privacy

The Platform is intended for users aged 18 and above. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If we become aware that we have collected data from a minor without appropriate consent, we will delete it promptly.

10Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or a notice on the Platform before they take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
